Fiber optic cables are equipped with two types of fiber optic connectors. These connectors allow for connections between fiber optic cables and various wired network devices. They come in various shapes and sizes, with the two most common being SC and LC fiber optic connectors.
SC fiber optic connector
Therefore, before we directly understand the differences, let's take a detailed look at these two types of connectors. Firstly, there are SC connectors or standard connectors. It was first introduced in 1991 and is one of the oldest fiber optic connectors.
Unlike LC connectors, SC fiber optic connectors have a push-pull system for locking. This ensures a persistent and long-lasting connection. This connector is commonly used for audio and video fiber optic cables. Due to its ease of use, it occupies a dominant position in the market. The locking system makes it very easy to connect or disconnect.
LC fiber optic connector
LC connectors or Lucent connectors are smaller than any fiber optic connector. It has a 1.25mm collar made of ceramic material. Lucent is a Latin word that means to emit light. The sleeve in this connector is a mechanical fixing device or small tube that can protect the exposed or peeled fiber optic cable.
Once the LC connector is inserted into the device, both the optical cable and the device use light beams to transmit data. It is mainly used for single-mode fiber optic cables because they have a small core that can only transmit one beam of light.
The LC connector was first introduced to replace the SC connector. However, due to its latch locking system, its efficiency is not very high. Due to its small size, it is very suitable for densely populated panels and smaller spaces.
difference
SC and LC fiber optic connectors have different measurement values. SC has a 2.5mm plug, while LC has a 1.25mm plug.
The design of SC and LC fiber optic connectors is also different. LC demands higher standards due to its innovative style, but SC ensures stronger connections due to its ease of use.
The service life of SC and LC fiber optic connectors also varies. LC connectors may be relatively new as they emerged in the early 2000s, but they also offer similar insertion loss, speed, and connectivity features as SC connectors.
